This follows the acquisition of 480 WH Smith High Street locations by Modella Capital, the owners of Hobbycraft.
For Cirencester residents, WH Smith on Castle Street is more than just a shop; it's a part of the town's fabric. Located at 19-21 Castle Street, the building itself has a rich history, being a Grade II listed building that shows architectural and historic interest. Historical records show that the building has 17th century origins, and also that it was converted to a WH Smith shop in the 1920s.
While the WH Smith name will remain at airport, railway station, and hospital outlets, our local Castle Street store will transition to TGJones. Modella Capital has assured that Post Office services, often located within WH Smith branches, will continue.
The new owners have stated their intention for "business as usual" during the transition. However, retail analysts anticipate a review of store performance. Modella Capital, with a portfolio that includes Hobbycraft, Crafters' Companion, and The Original Factory Shop, aims to bring a "family" feel to the rebranded TGJones.
What the future holds for the Cirencester shop, and whether there will be job changes, is currently unknown, as Modella has not provided clarity. This transition nonetheless marks a new chapter for the historically significant presence on Castle Street. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
